Being Others Minded in 2019

This is day one of 2019. It is a time of new beginnings and making resolutions. The more I thought about this I realized that our New Year’s resolutions are typically me-centered and not focused on others. “I” want to lose weight, “I” want to work out more, “I” want to find a new job, and so on. Now I am the first person to admit that you need to make sure that you get yourself in line before you can help anyone else. I talked about this specifically in my blog last week. It’s true that God will not bless your mess. After reading today’s blog CLICK HERE if you would like to read about that.

When it comes to 2019 what “I” want to do is be a better servant to others. I want to start seeing the world through a lens that focuses on helping people. In the bible (Matthew 20:28) it clearly states this in the life that Jesus lived while he was on the earth- “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” My goal this year is to be more Christ-like.

See a need, fill a need

A phrase that we use at our church is “see a need; fill a need”. It is a selfless attitude. Instead of telling someone else about an issue, you find a way to get it resolved. If you can’t do it, you will find someone who can. Too many times in our life we see a situation where we can help, but we don’t because it would inconvenience us. In order to have a mentality of helping others you need to be willing to sacrifice something and one of the most valuable things you can give is your time.

This morning I made a small step in the right direction. I don’t drink coffee, but my wife does. So, I went out in the kitchen before she was awake and made it for her. It took me only 2 minutes and it brought a big smile to her face. A small, but valuable deposit in our love bank. That was easy and didn’t take much time. I bet that her day started a little bit better and it just may trigger her to search for a way to do something helpful for someone else. Some call it a “pay it forward” mentality.

What is important to realize is that we are not serving others to get accolades. We are doing this to bring joy and assistance to them. To brighten their day and lighten their load. I believe that when you focus on the needs of others, that people will do the same for you. In sports I would correlate this to playing for the name on the front of the jersey, not the one on the back of it.

Now a life focused on serving others is worthy. The next step would be a life focused on serving God. In church, pastors often speak of tithing. It is a tenth part. Essentially you give 10% of your earnings to the church. While this is difficult for some people to commit to, I believe that tithing your day to God is even harder. Could you give him 2 hours and 40 minutes of your day?

“Can you tithe your day to God?”

Billy Horton

Now some of you may be thinking “yo man, pump the brakes”. How in the world could I do that? If I work 8 hours and sleep 8 hours, I only have 8 left and half of those are spent eating and driving! I am not saying that you need to be like James and have “camel’s knees” and spend all this time in prayer. It was said that James prayed so much he knees were calloused like that of a camel. What you could do is spend time with God by living your life having a servant’s attitude.

Here are some ideas when thinking about tithing your day to God:

  1. Begin and end your day spending time reading the bible and praying.
  2. Listen to Christian music stations or sermons while you are in the car.
  3. Attend small groups or bible studies.
  4. Serve at your local church.
  5. Be cognizant of the world around you and look for ways to help others.

So, as we all enter 2019 with the mindset of bettering ourselves, I encourage you to also think of how you can improve the lives of others by sacrificing some of your time to bring value to their lives. I also challenge you to spend more time with God. I know from my own experience, that the more time I spend with Him, the more I am able to hear that soft still voice that guides me and gives me wisdom.
